The superfamily Dictynoidea includes spiders that produce a particular type of non-sticky silk called cribellate silk, made using a specialized organ: the cribellum. This type of silk gives their webs a woolly appearance and captures prey through mechanical entanglement. The calamistrum comb, located on the hind legs, is used to “comb” the cribellate silk. These spiders are often small, inconspicuous, and live in varied habitats such as walls, rocks, leaf litter, or low vegetation. Dictynoidea notably includes the families Amaurobiidae and Dictynidae. Their unique biology makes them of particular interest in the study of silk evolution.
