Stratiomyidae – Soldier Flies
The Stratiomyidae, commonly called “soldier flies,” form a diverse family of dipterans with great variety in shape, size, and color. Some species display metallic patterns or yellow and black stripes mimicking wasps. Their wings often lie flat over the abdomen, making them easy to recognize. Adults visit flowers to feed on nectar, while larvae live in environments rich in organic matter: compost, moist litter, rotting wood, and even stagnant aquatic habitats. Some species are used in sustainable agriculture for recycling organic waste. Their striking morphology and vivid colors make them appealing photographic subjects.
