Syrphidae, or hoverflies, are remarkable flies in many ways. Their hovering flight, often yellow and black striped appearance, and flower-visiting behavior frequently cause them to be mistaken for hymenopterans such as bees or wasps. This mimicry protects these harmless flies from predators. Adults feed on nectar and pollen, making them important pollinators. Larvae, depending on the species, have varied diets: some are aphidophagous (consume aphids), others are saprophagous or even mycetophagous. Easy to observe on flowers, hoverflies are an excellent subject for naturalists and a valuable ally in the garden.
