The Lycaenidae include blues, coppers and hairstreaks – small, delicate butterflies with metallic colors. They inhabit flower-rich meadows, banks and path edges. Some are associated with specific host plants (clovers, brooms, brambles…), and several species have a symbiotic relationship with ants, which protect the caterpillars in exchange for sugary secretions. Their flight is quick and fluttery, but they often rest on flowers or warm stones. This discreet group includes many local species sensitive to habitat change.
