Cambodia
Cambodia has a rich and complex history that spans over two millennia. It was once the center of powerful Hindu and Buddhist kingdoms, leaving behind a remarkable architectural legacy, most notably the famous temples of Angkor. For centuries, the Khmer Empire flourished in the region, controlling much of Southeast Asia.
However, Cambodian history has also been marked by turbulent periods. In the 15th century, the kingdom began to decline, gradually losing its power and influence. In the 19th century, France established a protectorate over Cambodia, making it part of French Indochina. The country gained independence in 1953.
Sadly, in the 1970s, Cambodia plunged into one of the darkest chapters of its history with the rise of the Khmer Rouge, led by Pol Pot. Under their brutal regime, the country suffered genocide and mass repression, resulting in the deaths of millions. The fall of the Khmer Rouge in 1979 left Cambodia devastated, facing enormous challenges in rebuilding.
Today, Cambodia is a developing country with a growing economy and a transforming society. Despite its tragic past, the country is gradually rebuilding, and its resilient people strive to preserve and celebrate their rich culture and history.
Located in Southeast Asia, Cambodia shares borders with Thailand to the west and northwest, Laos to the north, and Vietnam to the east and southeast. The country’s southern border meets the Gulf of Thailand.
Cambodia’s geography is primarily shaped by two major systems: the Mekong River basin and the southwestern mountains. The Mekong plains, covering most of the country, are fertile and ideal for agriculture. The Mekong River runs through Cambodia from north to south, playing a vital role in irrigation and transportation.
The southwestern mountains, part of the Annamite Range, are covered in tropical forests and home to remarkable biodiversity. Some of these mountainous areas remain underdeveloped, making them attractive destinations for travelers seeking adventure and unspoiled nature.
In summary, Cambodia is a fascinating country with a rich history and diverse landscape, offering travelers abundant opportunities for cultural and natural exploration. Its difficult past has shaped its path, but Cambodia continues to grow and move toward a promising future.

Map of Our Journey:
Special Mention: APOPO
Special mention to the APOPO association, whose mission is to clear landmines in affected countries, including Cambodia. We were lucky to meet their amazing Tanzanian rats!
On the road between Siem Reap and Angkor Thom, there’s a center run by the association. It includes a shop but, most importantly, an educational tour and presentation of their work.
