Chiang Mai

Nestled at the foot of northern mountains, Chiang Mai is the major city of northern Thailand, renowned for its relative calm, spirituality, crafts, and landscapes. Former capital of the Lanna kingdom, it retains a strong cultural identity, very different from Bangkok.

City of temples and traditions

The historic center, still bounded by moats, houses more than 300 temples:

  • Wat Phra Singh, a jewel of Lanna style.
  • Wat Chedi Luang, an ancient stūpa partly collapsed but imposing.
  • Wat Chiang Man, the oldest temple in the city.
  • Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, perched at 1,000 m altitude, offering magnificent views over the valley.

Chiang Mai is also a major center for meditation and spiritual retreats, open to all.

Crafts and markets

The city is famous for its local craftsmanship:

  • Textiles, ceramics, umbrellas, carved wood…
  • Sunday Walking Street and Night Bazaar: popular, lively, and accessible markets.
  • Numerous workshops and cooperatives offering ethical, handmade products.

Nature and excursions

Around the city, you can:

  • Go on hikes in the mountains and traditional villages.
  • Visit ethical elephant sanctuaries (no rides!).
  • Explore the northern tribes, coffee, and tea plantations.

Atmosphere

Chiang Mai charms with its slower pace, fresher air, and quality of life. It’s an ideal place to stay for several days or more.

It also hosts a community of artists, digital nomads, and creators.

Conclusion

Chiang Mai is a subtle blend of city and mountain, tradition and creativity. Less overwhelming than Bangkok but equally rich, it reveals another facet of Thailand: peaceful, rooted, inspiring.

Before starting, I especially want to thank our guide Dolly Bacque Duchanee who “put up with us” throughout our stay in this magnificent city. Super available, speaks French, and simply amazing! Hiring a guide in Thailand is a must! Firstly, you gain access to activities or visits you wouldn’t have thought of. Secondly, the guide is your translator! Making communication with Thais much easier! Highly recommended!

Wat Chedi Luang - วัดเจดีย์หลวง
